I want my creations to be wearable

Designer Archana Rao launched her label in 2011 and debuted at the Lakme Fashion Week in 2012. From tailored jackets to contemporary Indian wear, her pieces have clean, classic lines and incorporate mute tones and prints with quirky contrasts. Her collection will be showcased at Amethyst on Wednesday. It will be curated by #Shilpa #Reddy and styled by #Arti #Muthiah.

Excerpts from a chat with Archana:

How would you describe your creations?

I would like to believe they are timeless and classic creations made out of basic fabrics. The prints and embellishments are all created in-house by my team and I. My label is not about following what is trendy now. Most of the creations can be worn about 10 years down the line. I like to keep my fashion creations wearable and real. That’s the USP of my collection.

What have you created for Chennais fashionistas?

This is the first time I am showcasing my collection in the city. I will have a range of western and Indian festive creations. While fashionistas can expect lots of classic shirts, crop tops and flowy skirts from my western repertoire, we will also have sarees with delicate embellishments that can be worn with crop tops or blouses from the Indian range. The cuts will be feminine and there will be lots of sheer.

Your creations are worn by actresses including Deepika, Samantha and Rakulpreet. Please comment on the link between fashion and films.

They both depend on each other a lot. When celebs wear my clothes, it gives the brand much more visibility. I am really thrilled when an actress chooses to adorn my creation on the red carpet or film events. I remember when Deepika wore a shirt designed by me on a TV show, I was so ecstatic.
