Kalki Award for
"Bhava"
at
Cleveland Thyagaraja Aradhana 2003
Kalki magazine announces a special award for the Music Competition at the Cleveland Thyagaraja Aradhana 2003.
The Kalki Award for
"Bhava" will be given to one male and one female singer. All the participants in the regular competition are automatically eligible and no special registration is required. The award carries a citation and a certificate as well as a specially made, traditional, sruti box. The award will be given during the regular presentation ceremony following the competition. The winners will be profiled in
Kalki.
Kalki Krishnamurthy, the legendary Tamil writer and journalist frequently wrote critiques of music under the name Karnatakam. A recurring theme in his writings is about
"Bhava" or expression. Music must touch the listener's heart. It must instill emotion, sensitivity and an appreciation for beauty. The singer must find the voice of the composer. A well-trained voice, correct sruti, proper diction, technical perfection, and involved presentation are all elements necessary in Carnatic vocal music. There is something more. The singer should be involved in the music and find meaning in the song. This involvement must find expression through the singer and reach the listener. This
"Bhava" then is an attempt by the singer to find the composer's voice through the music and communicate it to the listener. This is a constant journey and not a destination.

Kalki magazine is proud to associate itself with the Cleveland Thyagaraja Festival 2003 in presenting this Kalki Award. We congratulate all of the participants in the contest for their interest and their dedication to Carnatic Music. We hope this award will inspire all of the entrants to seek
"Bhava" in their music.
Extensive coverage of the Cleveland festival will be carried in Kalki magazine and on our website at
